You end up not using all the heavy compression and transient shaping because the samples have `that sound', and so the drumbus doesn't have that gel effect that comes from everything pumping away together. It's just not a satisfying and realistic end result. BUT if you have an individual snare sample which is ALREADY compressed and saturated, then you are just repeating that compressor sound on each hit, even if the hit is in a fast fill. Take a snare fill for example the way the rapid-fire snare hits interact with the compressor, and with the overall drum bus compressor, helps bring out the awesome power and variability of the sound. If you can take a really raw drum library like the 8dio libraries, and find a good signal chain where you process the snare and the kit with heaps of nice parallel processing and do all the tricks, you can get a sound which has the impact of SSD, but with more naturalism. My issue with SSD is that if you use it, (as I have), purely as a sampled programmed drum part instead of just a layer, the extremely processed drums end up sounding robotic and fatiguing.

John I think the SSD samples are really well suited to their Trigger program, because you are adding a highly processed repetitive drum sound on top of a natural variable real performance. PS If you have Superior Drummer, you can load EZ Drummer titles through it.

I also have their more Pro Superior Drummer, but honestly its like having to do a drum submix as the sounds are more raw and unprocessed and need a lot more work. Give me Standard Midi mapped drums that can be split out over a pad controller any day. I wish they would do an Orchestral/Cinematic one as I like they ease of programming as I hate using Kontakt for drums. But they also have everything from Reggae, Jazz, Americana, Latin to Hip Hop.

If you want the full on rock/metal sound go for Made Of Metal or Metal Machine. They have quite a large range of kit styles and the base product comes with 2 kits recorded at Mark Knopflers Grove Studios. It even has a built in pattern sequencer to quickly sketch a song up in and you can drag the patterns into a midi lane for reuse. It has tons of MIDI loops and a built in search facility to select them by timescale, style etc and as they are MIDI you can re-edit them if needed or use them as starting points. Surely if speed of use and simplicity are the key EZ Drummer? I'm thinking Greenday and Nickelback or anything CLA, so that hard hitting drum sound where there's lots of overdriven guitars.Д«ut then again, maybe my ears are fried. If I had a take-away thought, it would be that Steven Slate has a distinct idea of what a good drum kit is supposed to sound like, and I think he favours hard rock drum sounds where the drums are produced up-maybe a bit plastic in the upper mids,sort of like how odd a heavy metal drum kit sounds when it's all alone versus listening in with the assault of the guitars etc. It all comes down to marrying the right kit to the music you're doing. But I've had trouble at times with BFD3 as well. BFD3 is a deeper concept and, to my ears, more fulfilling as the sounds are a bit less produced and you can sculpt them - aka takes more time. I find to 'get them to sit in a mix' is more about choosing the right kit versus adding plugins to get the right sound-like when I'm using BFD3. This is a load and play kind of thing, not too fussy like some other drum libs.ДЄs far as the sounds, to me, they are a bit on the produced side. They use their own sample playback, not Kontakt, but it's reasonable to get around in.
